Country School Plaque Program

Yellowhead County has initiated the Country Schools Commemorative Signage Program to mark the county’s historic one-room schoolhouse sites, and to preserve and honour the memory of these sites, as many of the schools were built over 100 years ago and are no longer standing.

Yellowhead County has partnered with Grande Yellowhead Public School Division No. 77 (GYPSD), to provide funding for the creation of the signage as the country schools have been amalgamated into what is now GYPSD.

Over two dozen successful applications have been received so far and all include stories, historical dates, and anecdotes about the schools.  For further information about the Country Schools Commemorative Signage Program, or for an application, please contact the Heritage Coordinator.
