Yellowhead County’s Agricultural Services Department has four grain testers available for use throughout the County. These grain testers will help producers monitor the condition of their grain more accurately by measuring the moisture of harvested or stored grains. The use of a grain moisture tester will help you to make informed harvesting decisions that save you time and money!
Understanding when a field is ready to harvest is one of the critical components of maximizing yields. The introduction of moisture testers to farming replaced guesswork with a valuable tool that accurately measures moisture readings right in the field.
There are several reasons why knowing grain moisture is important; but the main reason is to protect investment. Moisture content is almost universally used as a price determinant when trading grain. This means that moisture content at various stages of growth, harvest and sale can mean extra dollars for the season. For example, grain stored too wet will spoil. If too dry, the nutritional value declines. Both large and small farmers can benefit from good moisture analysis.
The four grain testers are held by local residents who you can contact and bring a grain sample to for testing.
