Cadomin Community Society / Wildland Urban Interface Wildfire Response / Ag Services Bursary / Bylaw 6.23 First Reading / Bylaw 6.23 First Reading / Hinton West Urban Fringe ASP / Flood Damaged Culverts Tender / Letter to Minister on Wildfire Preparedness

Cadomin Community Society – Council received an invitation from Curtis Wey on behalf of the Cadomin Community Society inviting Council to attend the ribbon cutting for the Cadomin Community Hall on June 29, 2024. Council accepted the invitation as information.

Wildland Urban Interface Wildfire Response – The County is requesting a meeting with the province’s Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services to discuss concerns with the province’s Wildland Urban Interface program and representatives of the program. During the spring wildfires, there were several incidents of unprofessional conduct by members of this program, including stepping outside their agency duties, as well as actions that disrupted structural protection systems.

Ag Services Bursary – The Agricultural Services Bursary was awarded to Emery Unger in the amount of $500 as recommended by the Yellowhead County Agricultural Services Board. The bursary is for students pursuing post-secondary education in an Agricultural or Environmental related field.

Bylaw 6.23 First Reading – Council gave First Reading to Bylaw 6.23 to dispose of the Municipal Reserve on a portion of Plan 8122322 Block 5 Lot 7MR. The changes will require a survey of the property and will be paid for by the adjacent property owner. The Public Hearing for Bylaw 6.23 is scheduled for November 14, 2023.

Hinton West Urban Fringe ASP – Council gave second and third reading to Bylaw 5.23 to repeal Bylaw no. 24.02 (Hinton West Urban Fringe Area Plan) as it doesn’t align with the Intermunicipal Development Plan. A Public Hearing was held on September 26, 2023.

Flood Damaged Culverts Tender – Council awarded the culvert rehabilitation contract for eight culvert sites that were damaged by the spring flooding to Martushev Logging Limited in the amount of $1,236,048.67 excluding GST. These sites were deemed the top priority for culvert rehabilitation in addition to the other culvert sites also damaged this spring.

Letter to Minister on Wildfire Preparedness – A letter will be sent to the province’s Minister of Forestry and Parks requesting a meeting to discuss issues encountered in the 2023 Wildland season, and the province’s plans for the 2024 Wildland season. The letter highlights concerns including the lack of aircraft to fight fires, availability and firefighting readiness regarding training and resources, and several other key items.
