Community members were invited to visit Yellowhead County’s Station 12 and participate in a variety of activities and learning experiences.
Edson, AB (October 21, 2022) – On Saturday, October 15th, the Yellowhead County Fire Department (YCFD) held an open house at the County’s Station 12 in Edson as part of Fire Prevention Week. Approximately 85 people attended, with both children and adults enjoying the event.
There were several activities to take part in, including shooting a fire hose and dragging Rescue Ruth, the training mannequin, to safety. Attendees also had the opportunity to use a hammer to knock down a piece of wood, simulating when firefighters break down doors or walls to get inside a burning building.
The kids could also try on a youth-sized firefighting outfit and check out the inside of the fire trucks on site, which was a big hit. YCFD also gave out firefighting-related goodies and prizes for participating in the different activities.
Other fun activities included a tug-of-war against the firefighters and a gear demonstration by Deputy Fire Chief Cory Chegwyn and Firefighters Jennifer Petkau and Joshua Sweet. Some of the firefighters even showed off their skills and bravery by climbing the 65-foot aerial ladder on top of a fire truck.
The open house was clearly enjoyed by those who attended, with one eight-year-old participant saying, “I think this is one of the best things we’ve ever gone to.”
Deputy Fire Chief Chegwyn confirmed that it was a great time. “The event was well received with many attendees staying over an hour visiting with friends while the kids enjoyed the activities,” he said. “This is a hallmark of a successful community event! YCFD crews always enjoy this kind of public interaction.”
A big shout-out goes to the YCFD members who participated in the open house: Deputy Fire Chief Chegwyn, Lieutenant Megan Scaife, and Firefighters Ricson Basa, Warren Dauble, Abby Proskow, Andrea Donkin, Joselyn Munkler, Jennifer Petkau, and Joshua Sweet. Great job!
