Election Workers

Yellowhead County is holding a municipal election on Monday, October 18 and is recruiting workers to assist us in delivering another successful election!

Election workers will be required to manage the election process which includes setting up the voting stations, greeting voters, asking questions of voters, assisting with the voting process, completing the required forms, and counting ballots at the end of the day.

The deadline to apply is 4:30 p.m. Friday, September 24, 2021.

The following opportunities are available:

  • Presiding Deputy Returning Officers
  • Deputy Returning Officers
  • Deputy Returning Officers – Second Shift

Requirements for all positions: 

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age;
  • Available to work from approximately 9:00 a.m. until completion of the ballot count on Election Day;
  • Available to attend the training sessions;
  • Election workers are not required to be Yellowhead County residents.

Election Worker Position Descriptions:

  • Presiding Deputy Returning Officer

    The Returning Officer (RO) is in charge of the election and must ensure that the Election Day is carried out in accordance to the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA).

    • • Supervise voting station and workers while maintaining order within the voting station.
      • Supervise and assist with set up of voting station at 9:00 AM on election day which is one hour before opening of the station.
      • Understand each position within the voting station and ensure election workers fulfill their duties.
      • Distribute ballots to DRO(s).
      • Assist DRO(s) in facilitating the vote.
      • Meet and greet voters and ensure they have their identification.
      • Answer any questions or concerns voters may have.
      • Monitor voting compartments throughout the day to ensure there is no campaign material left in the compartment, and they are adequately stocked.
      • Liaise with Candidates Agents and Scrutineers.
      • Ensure secrecy of the vote.
      • Ensure proper closing of voting station and record results.
      • Return materials to Yellowhead County’s Edson office.
    • Remuneration:
      $375.00 for Election Day
      $100.00 for Training (approx. half day in Edson)
      $50.00 for Meals and incidentals Total: $525.00
  • Deputy Returning Officer

    The Presiding Deputy Returning Officer (PDRO) is in charge of the Election Day Activities at the voting station and must ensure all election procedures in the LAEA are followed.

    • Assist with set up of voting station at 9:00 AM on election day.
    • At the direction of the PDRO, open the station at 10:00 AM.
    • Process voters by checking identification, assist with registration forms and issue ballot to eligible voters.
    • Assist with counting the ballots.
    • Assist with cleaning and closing the voting station.
    • Other tasks as assigned by the PDRO

    Remuneration:         

      • $325.00 for Election Day
      • $100.00 for Training (approx. half day in Edson)
      • $50.00 for meals and incidentals
      • Total:  $475.00
  • Second Shift Deputy Returning Officer

    The Deputy Returning Officer (DRO) will work at the voting station alongside the PDRO. They will facilitate the vote and counting of the ballots at the end of voting.

    • All duties of Deputy Returning Officer, however they will begin their shift at 3:00 PM and remain at the voting station until the ballots have been counted and the station is cleaned and closed.

    Remuneration:

    • $150.00 for Election Day (maximum of 6 hours)
    • $100.00 for Training (approx. half day in Edson)
    • $30.00 for Meals and incidentals
    • Total:  $280.00
