Here are the entries for the 2024 County Pride Garden Contest:

  • Destanne Erickson

Gardening is a hobby of mine that keeps me busy. I love to spend time out in my yard, watching everything grow. I start 90% by seed myself so gardening starts in February for me. I love to grow things you can’t just go and buy at the grocery store. This year some of the unique things I’m growing are Luffas for shower luffas, Crystal apple cucumbers, cucamelons, lemon cucumbers, chocolate peppers, rainbow peppers, purple peas and purple beans. A lot of these wouldn’t happen if it wasn’t for my husband building my geodesic dome greenhouse.

  • Sandy Strand (Honourable Mention – Non-Voting)

My Name  is Mrs Sandy Strand. I am very proud of my garden

I work hard to get to look this way. I dug it  out  out out by hand. It was a mess when we first moved here .There was no flowers  or fruit  tree.

I am amazing  at myself. It’s very hard for me to get around but love been outside. It’s a Happy Place for me to be in .

I have been working hard at my flowers  bed for a few years now. I even dug them out myself .And put in all the flowers. Took about two years before it’s got going .Now it looks amazing. I plant a Rose 🌹  bush in memory  of my mom and mother inlaw which bloom so beautiful  every  year.

  • Cynthia Borysko (Honourable Mention Non-Voting)

“Growing my own food is important; especially now with the cost of groceries increasing. I value sustainability. I like that I can walk around my yard and eat. Right now I am eating strawberries, tomatoes and cherries—soon the peas will come! I can go out to my yard with a bowl and bring in a salad for lunch. I share my garden’s bounty with my neighbours; some are refugees from Ukraine. I have shared fruit and veggies and received homemade perogies in exchange. My garden is a space where neighbours, friends and family gather. My garden is part of my identity; I am a Yellowhead County gardener.”
